Bangkok Lions Rugby Football Club

The Bangkok Lions Rugby Football Club was established in 2004 by a collection of some of Bangkok’s finest “old rugby hands” to promote and develop rugby amongst the Thai and Expatriate youth of Bangkok, the Club has grown from strength to strength in only two short years. The initiative has seen many of Bangkok’s leading rugby players involved in weekly coaching clinics on Saturday mornings at Bangkok Patana School including players from the British Club, The Southerners and The Old Bangkok Bangers.

The initiative targets all children and youths between 4 and 17 and starts after the school break at Songkhran (Mid-April) and runs for 12 weeks. There is a break for the school summer holidays and a return for about one more month before the Bangkok Soccer League starts. We regularly over 250 players turning out on Saturdays for both the coaching clinics and our intra-club mini league. To see our 2006 calendar click here.

The youngest ones play touch rugby (see picture right), while those from 7 years on are gradually introduced to the contact sport, with the laws modified according to their development in line with the guidelines of the English RFU.

BLRFC Chairman Bruce Hill recently said "Building on the massive success of our first two seasons in 2004 and 2005 we hope to see even more players turning out on Saturdays and as of December 2005 detailed planning was well underway for our 2006 season. We are constantly seeking new sponsors as and when opportunities arise in order to assist with keeping the costs for the participating children to a minimum and do encourage companies to come forward."

We had another major season in 2005, including hosting visiting teams from Hong Kong Football Club and Singapore Centaurs, and from St Andrews College Singapore, although we were unable to form a tour ourselves. One is already planned to Hong Kong in early 2006, as well as an end of season tour at the end of September 2006. Incoming tours are always welcome.
