There has been much
activity recently with the DHL Bangkok Lions Mini Rugby
Union, including a recent coaching clinic by former All
Blacks coach John Mitchell and a visit by ESPN Star
personality Justin “Sambo” Sampson.
Both were present along with
many parents of the Bangkok Lions and the wider
Bangkok rugby community
at the New Zealand Thai Chamber of Commerce dinner on
May 29.
On Saturday, June 12, the DHL
Bangkok Lions will be participating in the Caledonia
Asia Rugby Tens day. After registration, games will kick
off about
9am with matches played
consecutively on all three sports fields at the Patana
school grounds.
There will be a family party
atmosphere with a BBQ and FM 107 Drive Time DJ Russell
Jay acting as MC and providing entertainment. There will
be an age group Cup and Plate final with all children
playing on the main pitch in front of the stands.
Win or lose, each will receive
a medal for participating presented by sponsors
Caledonia Asia.
Rugby chairman Bruce
Hill said: “We continue to see steady improvement across
all age groups and all children have benefited from the
coaching clinics recently held by John Mitchell.
“Our thoughts when developing
the junior rugby were to break up the coaching and
league matches with two event weekends,
firstly the sevens weekend
which was successfully held a few weeks ago and now our
tens day. We
are hoping to see many parents
this week supporting their
children in a splendid family atmosphere.”
Last Saturday’s matches in the
4-6 year group saw The Cats beat The Warriors by four
tries to three, while The Harlequins and Wasps drew with
one try each. The 7-8 year group saw The Wanderers beat
The Crusaders eight tries to three and The Vagabonds
beat The Sharks by 11 tries to two.
In the 9-10 year group The
Typhoons beat The Hurricanes by five tries to two and in
the 11-12 age group as The Aliens and The Barbarians
fought out an impressive four try draw.
In the
under 18s match, which groups together children in the
age range of 13-17, The Eagles beat The Falcons 24
points to 7 in a Tens match.
