The Bangkok Lions Mini Rugby Union successfully kicked
off last Saturday, the 24th April, at the Bangkok
Patana School Sports Complex. Despite the intense heat,
over 160 children in the age range of 4 to 17 were
coached and played age group matches against each
throughout a four-hour period. Coaches from the
British Club and The Southerners participated last
week along with many parents and the feedback received
so far has been very positive.
With further children registering last Saturday
morning, the club has now signed up 186 players from
all over Bangkok and with more threatening to join
this coming weekend, it is hoped to have over 200
children involved.
Prior to the first of ten weekly sessions held last
week, DHL International (Thailand) Ltd. confirmed
sponsorship of the inter-age league matches, which
will be known as the DHL Bangkok Lions League.
Commenting on the sponsorship BLMRU Chairman Bruce
Hill said, “This is really marvelous news and a big
'thank you' must be extended to DHL. The aim of the
DHL Bangkok Lions League is to give the Children a
chance to display their skills, run around in a lovely
environment at Bangkok Patana and to spend Saturday
morning with the family. This certainly worked well
last Saturday.”
Hill further explained that the BLMRU Committee has
already started planning ahead for next year. “With
the ever increasing numbers of children involved we
have already started our planning for next season in
how this initiative can be extended further. DHL’s
sponsorship will greatly assist in that process and we
hope to make further announcements soon. Thanks must
also be extended to other major sponsors London
Development Company and Caledonia Asia.”
Amongst last Saturday’s matches in the 4 to 6 year
group, the Krungthep Warriors beat the Siamese Cats by
five tries to two including three tries by Ben
Farebrother while the Bangkok Harlequins and the
Bangkok Wasps drew two tries each. The 7 to 8 year
group saw the Krungthep Wanderers beat the Bangna
Vagabonds four tries to two and the Bangkok Sharks
beat the Siamese Crusaders three tries to one. In the
9 to 10 year group The Hurricanes beat The Typhoons by
1 try to nil whilst the 11 to 12 age group saw The
Aliens beat the Barbarians four tries to two including
three tries by Sean Ramsay.
In the under 17’s match many of the children were
playing fifteen aside rugby for the first time and
following their coaching session which included
learning general ball handling skills along with
rucking, scrummaging and lineout drills, The Eagles
beat The Falcons 4 tries to 2 in a very entertaining
match which included some very good forward play along
with powerful running from the back line.
Should there be any parents wish to register their
children, both boys and girls, to participate in the
next nine weeks, this can be done at the Sports
Complex opposite Bangkok Patana School, 2/38 Soi
LaSalle, Sukhumvit 105, from 8:30 a.m. on Saturday,
1st May. Please note the start times listed for the
